Traveling

These galleries are just fun personal pictures from a few of my more recent trips.  You can view shots from my cruise back from the UK on the Queen Mary 2 and my time at Oxford visiting my oldest daughter who was attending school there for a year. The trip on the queen was unexpected since I was to be back in just a week from Oxford. Unfortunately, the Icelandic volcano called “Eyjafjallajoekull” had other plans. I was literially on the runway sleeping while waiting for our plane’s turn to take off when we were called back and everyone was tossed off the plane.

I spent the next two weeks trying to get out of the UK but there was literally no way off the island. I had the foresight to get on a waiting list for a cabin on the QM2 after day two of the total airspace shutdown and two weeks later, 20 plus flight cancelations and a 150 dollar cab fare to Southampton, I was on the QM2. As it was we were two hours late in departing because of the crowds at the wharf waving cash in hand looking for any space available.

The good news was I had my Nikon D300 plus my Canon G11 with me so I had a good time shooting pictures all over the ship. The bad news was I terribly under dressed and the QM2 did not sell any mens clothes to speak of and they did not rent and suits or tuxes so I could not eat dinner in the main dining room. That was fine because the food at the buffet was top flight as were the bars.

As I’ve pointed out in several blog entries, always be prepared for the unexpected as a photographer but even I was surprised at how this trip turned out.

I’ll be posting some images from other trips to France, Italy, Rome and other places I’ve travel to in the coming weeks. So be sure to stop back and look at the new galleries as I get them in place.

Queen Mary 2

This gallery is about my unscheduled transatlantic cruise on the Queen Mary 2 from Southampton to New York in April 2010. It was unscheduled since I was supposed to fly home from the UK. I ended up stuck in the UK for over a week due to the ash cloud from the volcano Eyjafjallajokull. Most of these were taken with a Canon G11 pocket camera.

  1. It’s interesting how you got on a cruise on Queen Mary 2 ship. It’s unfortunately that it was a bit unplanned and you didn’t have formal clothes with you. But I am assuming you still had a good time? Most of the clients that we book on Queen Mary 2 seem to have a great time and talk very highly about the ship.

Dont misunderstand, I had a great time but all of us that were “refugee status” were very annoyed that Cunard would not accommodate us in the main dining room with without formal wear. And it’s not like they cut a deal, we paid top dollar to get aboard the QM2

  3. I see. Well, they certainly could’ve been and should’ve been a bit more accommodating, especially considering the situation with respect to volcano.

We thought so. But some good things did come out. I made some good friends and acquired a new taste for top shelf Scotch :) I would highly recommend both the Martini making class and the single malt Scotch tasting classes. They are a great deal for the price. The Commodore’s Club is one of the best places onboard to enjoy a quiet sip or two and a book

  5. You were still so fortunate because you still managed to meet new friends, well, you also have a good taste when it comes to drinks. :)

  6. The best thing about traveling is capturing photos. The real proof that you’ve been there. :)

  7. Traveling is indeed fun! Full of new things to learn and many adventures to enjoy on. Great pictures you have here.

  8. Wow! Those are really nice photos of Queen Mary.
