Taught by Professional Photographer and member of OC Photography Center, Michael Sweeney.
Have you ever wondered why the background of pictures are pleasantly blurred? How about that cool image of the child blowing out the candles on the birthday cake but they are not the typical white faced blasted look? Have you ever wanted to make art for your walls but none of your pictures look like those you see for sale? Have you wondered why so many of your snapshots look like everyone elses?

If the anwser is yes to any or all of these questions, then this is the class for you.

This class is for those that have either completed our beginning photography class or have been working on their own and would like to take their photography to a new level. This class is where we will review the basics and then take things forward so you can start to be the artist you want to be.

We have a new (to us) studio to shoot at for clients of Michael Sweeney Photography. Ive partnered with a Co-op in Brea that leverages the power of having several photographers splitting the costs of running a full service studio. What do I mean by full service? I mean, we have a front desk, a frame shop, waiting area, a private viewing room, make up area, three shooting sets and plenty of safe parking. And there is as killer cafe a few doors down from us :)

Oh yeas.. time to gather the family around the tree for the obligatory happy picture. Did you catch the sarcasm there? Christmas portraits always seems to bring out the worst in the families. Nobody wants to get dressed up, nobody wants their picture taken with the glued on fake smile and nobody wants to have a last memory of it.

I did a favor for a wedding shooter friend of mine, Angela Stanton and worked as a last minute second shooter for a same sex civil union (wedding) in Riverside at the First Congregational Church. The reception was held at the Mission Inn which is just down the street from the church. As a second shoot, I take my lead from the primary shooter but I was still able to get some nice shots. I put together a short slide show of the wedding and the reception using just my shots. The couple obviously cared deeply for each other and the family was very supportive and happy for the couple. It was nice change of pace to be involved in this wedding and meet everyone involved. I hope you enjoy the slide show and congratulations to Cynthia and Annasel, I wish wish you the very best in the coming years.

We started in Downtown Disney and went to Tomorrow Land from Main Street. Then we looped our way around the back of the park. My goal was to show off some of my favorite shooting spots that were not the common "Kodak Moment" locations. You know the spots, where the little Kodak plaque was put so the tourist knew where to take the picturesque spot picture. Are those even still around or am I just dating myself again?

We had Bambi Cantrell and Roberto Valenzuela who both are very inspirational and motivating speakers. Roberto in particular really "spoke" to me about shooting in shadows and how to use them. I find myself shooting a lot in the middle of the day or on really bright locations. One take away from Roberto is that you need to shoot, you need to practice and you don't need alot of to practice with. His case in point is shooting with his trademark melons and bananas. You practice shooting to get the lighting with them and then when it's for real, you already know how to do it and you don't waste time.

So Scott Kelby is having the 4th annual photowalk on Oct 1, 2011 and in the spirit of that event, I am a leader for a photowalk at Disneyland. Why Disneyland? because it offers a way to involve the entire family in a photography event. Too often I find myself at some shoot or another without anyone from my family. The kids are too young, it would require babysitters for my wife to tag along and truthfully, she would be lost at some of the events I go to.

I saw a very interesting blog posting on how to shoot flowers using a light box. I took a different approach since I did not want to build a cardboard box so anything else. I took my large softbox and flipped it upside down. I could do this because I use C stands with boom arms and it becomes very easy to change the orientation of a modifier. I just made sure that the legs were in the right position to take up the low weight and added a few sand bags for good measure.

I'm fortunate to live on a street where the neighbors all get along and almost every weekend, we have a pot luck "block party" since nobody likes to cook or be inside on a hot summer night. On major holidays we kick it up a notch and have friends and family come by for the party. Several years ago, I could easily stand everyone on the sidewalk and do the "say cheese" thing. This year was a bit different, I had to get on a 10 foot ladder and use a 12mm lens to get everybody into the fram

Brides are beautiful and because of that, the bride puts a temendous amount of effort and money into this one day. One of the jobs of the wedding photographer is to see that beauty in the bride regardless of circumstances or environment. It also means that at times you need to shoot knowing full well you will be doing something specific in post to make the vision a reality. This bridal shot which I took at Serra Plaza was one of those moments that I knew I had to shoot with postprocessing in mind and adjust accordingly.
